Don't Bring A Cannon to a Sling Fight

Don't Bring a Cannon to a Sling Fight: Why the "Biggest & Baddest" Gear Might Hold You Back

When King Saul in the Bible tried to suit up young David for his clash with Goliath, he strapped a massive sword to the kid's waist and piled on heavy armor. David took a few awkward steps, realized he couldn't move, and took it all off. His reason? "I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them."

Thousands of years later, that’s still the single best piece of advice for choosing your home defense setup.

It’s easy to walk into the shop and ask for the absolute highest-velocity, hyper-expansion round on the shelf. But if you’ve never run it through your personal firearm, you're wearing Saul's armor. [1Samuel 17]

Here are three quick rules for choosing defensive ammo you can actually trust:

Prove It in Your Weapon: Firearms are like picky eaters—what feeds flawlessly in your neighbor's pistol might cause a jam in yours. Always fire at least 50 to 100 rounds of your chosen defense ammo at the range to verify reliability. If it hasn't been tested, it isn't "proved."

Shoot What You Know: A ultra-heavy round does you no good if the snap-recoil makes you flinch or delays your follow-up shots. The best defense round is the one you can shoot accurately under pressure.

Beware Over-Penetration: Just because a round can punch through a brick wall doesn't mean you want it to. Consider your layout, your family, and your neighbors. You want stopping power that stays where it lands, not a runaway cannonball.

Leave the heavy, untested gear in the armor room. Pick a quality defensive round, run it at the range, and stick with what you’ve proven.
